Types of Loft ConversionA loft conversion is a blanket term for specific types of work that can be done to increase the space of the attic and to transform it into an extra living room, no matter what the function of that room will become. Depending on your situation you may choose a certain type of loft conversion, though it is best to seek advice from a specialist for the best results. It is also important to bear in mind any kind of planning permission or building requirements for your particular type of conversion. Dormer Extension: This kind of extension creates more room in the loft. A window will be created and from the outside this will look like a box with flat sides. Roof Light: These conversions are more useful for lofts that are already spacious enough, and therefore don’t need an extension. This will keep the current size but add in windows. This is perhaps more useful for those that do not need a large loft space, and you will not usually need planning permission for this kind of extension. Mansard: This type of conversion is popular in inner city areas. It does not involve an extension but uses the space already there. However, unlike the roof light, mansard conversions are usually built in flatter-roofed lofts. Again planning permission is generally not required. |
